The IET Institute of Energy Technology is dedicated to research and teaching in the fields of energy generation, distribution and utilisation. We develop innovative solutions for a sustainable and efficient energy future and work closely with industrial partners in the realisation of practical projects.

«We are shaping a sustainable energy future through innovation.» This is the vision of the IET. The energy future is not only sustainable, but is based on renewable sources and is resilient thanks to a decentralised structure and a variety of technologies and energy vectors. In partnership with industry and research organisations, the institute's 40 researchers carry out applied research projects in five specialist areas and pass on their expertise to stakeholders from industry, society, teaching and further education.

Our areas of expertise

Electrical power engineering

The Department of Electrical Power Engineering is dedicated to research and teaching in the fields of energy generation, distribution and utilisation. We develop innovative solutions for a sustainable and efficient energy future and work closely with industrial partners in the realisation of practical projects.

Scientific Computing Engineering

We specialise in numerical flow and multiphysics simulations for industrial applications in power engineering and thermodynamics. We specialise in arc simulations for circuit breakers and the fusion of machine learning techniques (surrogate models, MOR) with numerics.

Building technology

Buildings play a key role in the energy transition. In the area of building technology, the focus is on energy-efficient technologies, in particular heat pumps, for net zero/plus energy new buildings and sites as well as for refurbishment solutions in existing buildings as a combination of building envelope and technology.

Wind Energy Innovation

Wind energy is the fastest growing renewable energy source in the world. We are the first university of applied sciences in Switzerland to develop a special research programme in the field of wind energy and deal with pioneering topics for the digital, renewable future.

Power-to-X and hydrogen

Our research team develops Power-to-X technologies that can be used to store electricity seasonally or convert it into renewable fuels. In doing so, we are supporting the development of sustainable energy systems and making an important contribution to the energy transition.
